Day 10

One more piece of particle board left and we're done removing the old sub floor. The big guy is already over it. Days of bending, pulling and ripping have taken its toll - he is pretty much soar all over. But, we're almost there!
With the demolition work behind us, tomorrow we'll begin "Phase 2" of our Den Transformation Project. Well, maybe tomorrow - after all, it will be New Year's Day!

Day 9

Slow going on the floor. Nothing for me to do but open the door as my husband carts out pieces of the old particle board. Eleven sheets of "cabinet grade" plywood are in the garage laying in wait. Hopefully, that part will start tomorrow.

Day 5 through Day 9

More demolition work! My husband starts ripping up the particle board sub floor so that he can put down a "real"(plywood) sub floor. The work is difficult and slow. Unfortunately, I can't help him during this phase, except for minor chores such as opening doors, fetching "out of the way tools," etc. I am anxious to get to the next phase, which will be laying down the new - and improved - sub floor!

Day 4 (Christmas Day)

We spend most of the afternoon and evening tearing up the old carpet and carpet pad. This work is both gratifying and gross; gratifying in that a carpet, well passed it's prime, was finally being removed and gross in that the debris left behind was, well, gross! The shop vac filter valiently gave up its life as it relentlessly sucked up what looked like sand (maybe a little dramatic, but the filter did go.) My husband explained that this sandlike substance was actually the remains of the carpet glue. Ick!

Day 3

We go back to the store and everyone agrees - the rug we originally purchased is much too busy and yellow for our furniture. We all (the people who work at Bloomies are terrific!) start going through the piles again, one by one. Finally, there it is - totally different from the first one - a little bigger (which is fine), no yellow, a much lighter background and a simple, open pattern. It looks perfect. Now, the test is to see how it works in the room.

Wow - we love it!! It totally transforms the room. It compliments the furniture and gives a soft, warm feeling to the room. Perfect!

Day 1

Project "Den Transformation" background story:

We finally decide to tackle the long awaited, much debated "new floor for our den" project. The debate (for years) has been whether to re "wall-to-wall" carpet or to put a hardwood floor down. We're a family divided; two want carpet, two want wood. The argument against the wood is based on our dogs scratching up a hardwood floor with their daily antics. A solution is finally agreed on: a wood floor, but only if area rugs are put down to protect it.

Day 1 - We go to Bloomies for their "75% off all oriental rugs sale." With furniture swatch in hand and spend hours
going through piles of rugs (each one more beautiful than the next) with the help of the wonderful Mr. "P" and his staff. Persian rugs are out of the question - like velvet to touch, but out of our price range, even on sale. We end up with a beautiful 9x12 wool rug from Pakistan and a coordinating runner for behind the sofa. Yippee!

Uh oh - we take it home, roll it out and it's just not right. It fights the furniture - badly. Too much yellow.

Introduction

Welcome all!

As the Technology Specialist in an elementary school, one of my responsibilities is to teach technology to teachers. However, I have often found that, as exciting as techie stuff may be for me, teachers are often too busy to share in my enthusiasm.

Each year, I attend the Georgia Educational Technology Conference and each year I am wowed by what I learn and see. I leave re-energized about what I do for a living, but then hit a road block when I get back to school. How do I turn my teachers on to all of the cool "Web 2.0" stuff that's out there? This year, I had an epiphany: these applications are so perfect for classroom use, that exposure is all they need!
They are relevant - period!

Thus, the creation of this blog. Now, don't expect anything mind blowing here - this is not Julie to Julia! Instead, use this as an introduction, a guide, if you will, to some of the incredible things that you can use blogging for. Think science projects, newsletters, spelling words, etc. - the classroom applications are endless!

But, for me,
right now, the perfect topic to begin my blog with is to journal the long awaited transformation of my den. So, here we go...
